Suspect attempts to flee police by traveling wrong way on I-93

16 Jan

A Massachusetts State Police trooper working in Boston spotted a vehicle reported to be stolen out of Medford, and when he attempted to conduct a traffic stop, the driver fled.

The vehicle was reported stolen by Medford Police from a car dealership Monday morning. Initial reports are that the suspect, who gave a last name of Saunders, is a former employee at the dealership.

The chase started in the area of Andrew Square in South Boston. The suspect fled towards the rotary at Old Colony Ave & Morrissey Blvd, traveling the wrong way around the rotary, and then headed the wrong way down Morrissey. His speed was reported to be approximately 65 MPH. State Police terminated the pursuit due to safety reasons. The driver went the wrong way up the ramp onto I-93, driving Southbound on the Northbound side, before exiting and heading into the Port Norfolk neighborhood. Officers searched the area, and Boston Police located the vehicle nearby, unoccupied. A K-9 officer began a track, and State Police troopers found the suspect hiding under a truck in a backyard on Taylor Street. He was taken into custody and transported to the State Police barracks for booking.

The suspect let a female passenger out of the car near Granger St. Police are currently searching for her.

UPDATE: MSP has identified the suspect as Richard S. Saunders, a 48 year old Reading man. Mr. Saunders led police on a wrong way chase on Rt. 128 two weeks ago, and after being caught, was released on $100 bail.

Fine print: No person involved has been convicted of a crime. All persons are innocent until found guilty in court.
